If your home sits anywhere near the Malibu Pier area, La Costa Beach, or along Broad Beach Road, your chimney mortar is under constant chemical attack. Coastal salt deposits absorb moisture from marine fog, and that salt-laden water seeps into mortar joints. Once inside, it crystallizes as it dries, expanding and fracturing the mortar from within.
